GF Pizza is Hard to Find: Pizza Peel

I had the opportunity to visit the new Pizza Peel location in Matthews the other week, and was honestly so surprised by how delicious everything was! I usually have no expectations when going to a menu tasting, so it's always nice when I genuinely love everything that I try.

  1. Pizza Peel has 3 locations (Cotswald, Plaza Midwood, Matthews) and is opening their 4th location in Rea Farms.
  2. There is a secret pizza menu that patrons can order from, but you have to ASK for it!
  3. Gluten free pasta will be coming SOON!
  4. Most pizzas and sandwiches are extremely gluten-free friendly and can be modified to feet your dietary needs.
  5. They even have vegan cheese for all of my dairy-free friends!

Their Midwood East hummus appetizer can be modified gluten free by choosing the veggie dippers instead of the traditional pita chips.

It was difficult to choose which pizza to sample so we went with two of the most popular ones: Updyke (pictured in lower left) and So Fresh and So Clean (pictured in upper right). You can also create your own! I LOVED this pizza because it tasted more like flatbread. It was thin, crispy, and light tasting. It didn't leave me feeling gross and heavy, like some more traditional pizzas tend to do.

Next, we sampled a black bean burger on a gluten free bun. I honestly NEVER order veggie burgers but this one was unbelievable!! I am now obsessed! The bun was soft, not chewy like most gf buns are, and so it enhanced the flavor instead of taking away from the sandwich. I highly recommend trying a sandwich, at least so you can try this bun! (So happy it's NOT Udi's brand for once.)

And lastly, we have the gluten free chocolate cake. It was a nice, small size, good for either a personal dessert or sharing if you are pretty full. The cake was more fudgy in texture and very rich. I thought the food was such a standout that I would probably opt to eat my whole pie next time and skip dessert, but I'm so glad there's an allergy-friendly option!

Overall, I am so thankful to have tried this pizza joint! Trying gluten-free pizzas can be exhausting because nothing tastes "real." However, at Pizza Peel, they really value flavor. They have their staff sample different gluten-free crusts to select the best possible one, and are always looking to become more allergy friendly. I will definitely be returning!
