My Go To Brunch Spot: First Watch
I have been meaning to go to First Watch for a long time now. I haven't seen much hype on social media about the new location in Matthews, but have heard great from several people that have been to some of their Alabama locations. So when I got a day off, I naturally found myself texting my mom to get brunch. She's as picky as I am about food and while I do find myself frequently eating alone to do a review, I prefer the company.
I had NO expectations for this meal. I like to enter a restaurant with zero expectations because it leads to a more authentic experience. If I were expecting a restaurant to be the best in the world, then I might be disappointed, and if I have negative expectations then I might miss some great aspects of the meal.
First Watch took the place of the old Fudruckers in Matthews and is now a charming breakfast and lunch joint with a farmhouse feel. Despite only being open until 2pm, the place is constantly packed.
PRO TIP: If you don't feel like waiting for a table, use their App to reserve your spot in line.
The manager, Jennie, and I grew up in the same church. She knew about my food writing, and graciously let me sample all of their juices before selecting my own. I am not a juice girl. Not at all. I hate paying $10 for something that's going to leave me as full as water. BUT these juices were hands down the BEST I have EVER had. Ever. And priced reasonably at $3.99. I was floored! If this was any indication of the meal, this would be a winner.
I had to go with the Morning Meditation because it was so delicious and had a gorgeous presentation!
Next, we tried the Million Dollar Bacon from the seasonal menu. Words do NOT DESCRIBE how delicious this was!! If you go to First Watch and don't order anything else but the Million Dollar Bacon and a freshly squeezed juice, you will leave happy!
It was really difficult to select a breakfast choice. There are plenty of gluten-free and dairy-free options. They have gluten-free bread which makes all of their sandwiches safe choices as well.
I went with the Farmhouse Skillet Hash which was delicious! Highly recommend their hash because they are filled with delicious, fresh ingredients.
My mom opted for the Frittata Rustica, which she loved!
I mentioned that their coffee should be for sale, and discovered that it already was! I usually cannot drink coffee black, but was surprised that their flavor was so delicious that I didn't need cream or sugar. Their coffee is sustainably sourced from Columbia. Women who have lost their husbands to the violence of war make this coffee, and First Watch buys from them exclusively. I love supporting a business that stands on good ethics!
Thank you, First Watch, for an incredible experience and your generous hospitality!
